Lingzhi and Cordyceps are famous medicinal mushrooms that have long history of being used as a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) or as folk remedy in China, Japan and Korea. They shared similar therapeutic profile such as strengthening immunity; provide strong anti-oxidant, anti-inflammation, anti-tumor and anti-viral properties. Researchers began to realize the synergistic effect of combining Lingzhi and Cordyceps to reduce fatigue making one more energetic and at the same time provide potent support for one’s immunity.

Ganoderma Lucidum

Lingzhi, without a doubt, is one of the most famous medicinal mushrooms used as a folk remedy in China with more than 2000 years of history. Since ancient times, it has been called many names such as “Mushroom of immortality”, “Elixir of life” or “King of herbs”.  Lingzhi is also rooted deeply into their history and culture, as a symbol of peace, prosperity, happiness and longevity. Because of the numerous health benefits and no known toxicity, it has attained high reputation throughout the world.

Lingzhi Habitat

Lingzhi or Reishi mushroom or Ganoderma lucidum is a fungus that is soft (when fresh), flat and shaped like a kidney. As they grew older, they became more woody, harden and darker in colour. One can usually find wild Lingzhi growing on living aged trees or dead wood logs, in high and remote mountains. However, wild Lingzhi is extremely rare as there are only one or two Lingzhi out of 10,000 aged trees and they rarely reach maturity in good condition.

Lingzhi Cultivation

Due to scarcity, increase demand for Lingzhi have led modern technologies to cultivate Lingzhi under controlled and sterile conditions via Bag Cultivation and Log Cultivation method.

Cordyceps Sinensis

There are over 680 different species of Cordyceps but the best known species is Cordyceps sinensis (C.sinensis) due to its long usage as a traditional medicine. This caterpillar fungus is one of the most valued medicinal herbs in TCM history along with Lingzhi, Ginseng, Deer Antler and etc. As the Guardian of Lungs and Kidneys, Cordyceps, especially C.sinensis was written in ancient Ayurvedic literature and recognized as a medicinal product in China for few thousands of years. These magical fungi flourished in the high altitudes and low temperature of the Tibetan Plateau and have become a major part of Tibet’s economy boost.  This herb has similar become one of most reputable medicinal herbs due to its numerous health benefits with no known toxicity.

C.sinensis Habitat

It is neither grass nor worm; this caterpillar fungus is found in the soil at high elevation of 3500-5000 m of Tibet plateau, Qinghai and other parts of China, Nepal and India. This blade-shaped fungus is a parasite growing on different species of caterpillar, primarily the bat moth (Hepialus armoricanus Oberthur) which lives 6 inches under the soil.

C.sinensis Cultivation

Due to the economical boost that C.sinensis brings to the people, and to meet the high market demand, these fungi are over-harvested which resulted in serious damage to the environment and Cordyceps resources. Since then, C.sinensis had been officially classified as an endangered species by the China Authority, driving companies invent methods to produce large scale artificial cultivated Cordyceps. Living strains from natural C.sinensis such as Paecilomyces hepiali, Hirsutella sinensis, Cephalosporium spp. are isolated and cultivated. Large scale cultivation methods include Liquid culture or fermentation and solid-substrate method.
